Minecraft Mondays #15: Snow Golem

.. or as I call him, Pumpkin Head.

Jack-o-Lantern on a snowman.

You'll need two colors: an orange color, and a dark orange, brown, or rust color. (I let my son pick the two colors.)

This one's very simple. They're all pretty simple, but snow golem goes together esp. fast.

Cutting:

Orange: (1) 2 x 17"
        (1) 2 x 18"
        (2) 2 x 12 1/2"
        (2) 2 x 3 1/2"

Dark Orange, Brown, or Rust:
        (1) 2 x 17"
        (1) 2 x 18"
        (1) 3 1/2 x 3 1/2"

Prep: Stitch your 2 x 17" strips of orange & brown together. Stitch your 2 x 18" strips of orange & brown together, then further cut into the following.

From your 17" long rectangle piece, cut:
        (2) 3 1/2 x 3 1/2"
        (2) 3 1/2 x 5"

From your 18" long rectangle piece, cut:
        (2) 3 1/2 x 5"
        (4) 2 x 3 1/2"

Assembly: Once all of your pieces are cut and ready, lay them out and assemble each section in order of the numbered arrows below. Sew the two sections together per the gray arrow.

Voila! Snow Golem. :D

Next week is the last block in the fourth row!  Gold Steve. :)

In the meantime, I've got to get it in gear and finish TWO quilts by May 20, and get the school literacy night together by May 12th! *breathing into paper bag* I need to blog about literacy night, too, when I can get my act together and find a minute to do it!

Have a great week! Happy Sewing!

Minecraft Mondays #14: Mooshroom

Happy Monday!

This week is the Mooshroom. Which I called the red cow for a long time, to my son's great disapproval. :D

I've been looking forward to this one. It's one of my favorites for some reason.

You'll need red, black, white, and gray.

Cutting:

Red: (1) 3 1/2 x 5"
     (2) 3 1/2 x 3 1/2"
     (2) 2 x 3 1/2"
     (1) 2 x 21"***

White: (1) 3 1/2 x 5"
       (1) 2 x 21"***

Black: (2) 3 1/2 x 3 1/2"
       (2) 2 x 2"

Gray: (1) 2 x 6 1/2"
      (1) 2 x 3 1/2"

***If you can't get a 2 x 21" continuous strip from your fat quarter because you've already cut into it for your other blocks, you may have to piece it to get the length you need. I just had to add about 3" to the end of my white strip to get it to 21". But in the end, it will save time and lots of steps by doing it this way.

Prep:

Stitch 2 x 21" strips of red and white together, then cut into following units.

(2) 2 x 3 1/2"
(3) 3 1/2 x 3 1/2"
(1) 3 1/2 x 6 1/2"

Assembly:

This one is divided into four rows. Using the above pieces and your cut pieces, stitch each row together in order of the numbered arrows.

Then, assemble the rows in order according to the gray arrows.

Then you should have a finished Mooshroom. :D

Only two more blocks in this row, and then we'll be on to the last row!

If you missed my post about LuLu the youngest sewalong participant, you can check it out here. She's sewing her blocks on her own, on her Elna mini. :D The pictures her mom shared are great!

I also saw lots of blocks this week on Instagram.

@mellierc is catching up..

I love @candaceostewart's two different pigmen. :D

@little.emerz drafted up some additional blocks to make her quilt bigger. I love them!

@naturalencountersappleton's blocks made from civil war prints and batiks from her stash are fun to see come together.

@inspiritedmama started sewing along.

@daydreamsofquilts is using only her stash, too. It's fun to see how her blocks turn out each week.

@alfamare is catching up and making little changes to her blocks too. I like that people are putting their own spin on it and making their quilts unique!

@maritahaydon is doing QAYG method for quilting! I haven't tried that yet, and am excited to see how it turns out for her.

@shannajones99's grandson is contemplating the layout of his quilt. :D

@fatquartershop is all caught up.

@karens__photos made a witch..

@buttoncounter is catching up..

@chellempcs shared her squid and enderman..

@bgraham01 shared her pigman..

@happy4learning shared her squid and witch with a mole.. :D

..and @wisemantammy is catching up. I love her enderman eyes. :)

Thanks for sharing guys! It's so much fun to see your blocks!

Next week, it's Snow Golem week. I am still trying to figure out why Snow Golem has a pumpkin head. It's like fall collided with winter. So bazaar. ??

Anyway, have a great week!

Mini Minecraft Sewist: LuLu

One of the most fun things about this Minecraft Sew Along has been seeing all of the excited kid pics and/or kids helping to sew their blocks. I'm not exaggerating when I say it makes my eyes misty to see them. It blows my mind that something I drew up for my son could bring so much excitement to kids, and even spark their interest in learning to sew.

Last week I got the sweetest message from Jen in Australia. She gave me permission to share it, along with LuLu's pictures. It made my whole day and an Elna Mini? How cool is that! Here it is:

Just thought I'd share my pictures of my 8 yr old sewing her own quilt.  I am cutting out the pieces for her and she's sewing it all on her elna mini, she even does all the pressing herself.  I helped her with the first two and now she is on her way and I barely need to supervise.  Love that this has gotten her into sewing, it's very simple and using basic techniques, but not boring because she loves watching as the blocks come together!  Once she's finished I'll put it all together for her and quilt it.  We're in Australia.  She's already said she didn't like a couple of the faces so I have drafted them slightly differently for her, which is fine!  If she wants to go ahead I might end up making some of our own blocks so we can finish it more quickly.  But love that you have made it so easy for her, she follows the tutorials completely on her own using the ipad. Many thanks!  Jennifer

How cute are the pinning pictures, and the concentration, and the ipad sitting next to her, and the Elna Mini?! Thanks for letting me share it, Jen! And thanks for sharing it with me!! I love that you're changing some of the blocks just for her. :D

 Lulu rocks! And she's only 8 yrs old! :D

Hi, LuLu! Thanks for sewing along with me! You're doing such a great job!

Next Monday is the Mooshroom.. I can't wait for that one. Red's my favorite color and he just looks like fun to make. My son's looking forward to that one, too.

Thanks again for sewing along everyone, and don't forget to use the tags #minecraftmondays and/or #minecraftquilt on IG or Twitter if you post pics! :D

We've been busy this week with field trips and also working on the school's Family Literacy Night, which also has a Minecraft theme this year, and I was tasked with making up the passport (the card that the kids get stamped at each station). We used a passport last year, and when the kids get all of the sections stamped they can turn it in for a chance to win a doorprize. It keeps them engaged and moving around the room. This will be this year's passport. haha!

Have a great weekend. I'll be over here OD'ing on Minecraft. ;)

Minecraft Mondays #13: Zombie Pigman

Happy Monday!

This week is the Zombie Pigman. It's late Sunday night, and I just got the diagram done and am about to use it to make my block.

This past week has been really busy.  Some things are starting to catch up to me. Along with starting a new quilt project for Riley Blake, I'm helping plan my son's school literacy night (which is also Minecraft themed this year--I'll be in full Minecraft burnout after that! ha!) and my father-in-law is here visiting for a couple of days. Busy but FUN!

For now, let's get going on the Pigman. :D

You'll need some pink, light gray, a bit of green, and a tiny bit of black, white and dark gray.

Cutting:

Light Gray: (1) 3 1/2 x 6 1/2"
            (1) 3 1/2 x 5"
            (1) 3 1/2 x 3 1/2"
            (5) 2 x 2"

Pink: (1) 5 x 6 1/2"
      (1) 3 1/2 x 5"
      (1) 2 x 3 1/2"
      (2) 2 x 2"

Green: (1) 2 x 9 1/2"
       (3) 2 x 3 1/2"
       (2) 2 x 2"

Black: (1) 2 x 3 1/2"
       (1) 2 x 2"

White & Dark Gray:
(1) 2 x 2" of each color

Prep: Stitch together the pieces indicated by the small gray arrows first.

Assembly: Assemble each half in order of the numbered arrows, then stitch the two halves together as shown.

And there you have one Zombie Pigman. :D I just made the block according to the cutting instructions and the diagram, to double check, and it should be accurate.

I'll add photos in tomorrow when I can get some. For now, it's off to sleep. Literacy Night meeting in the morning! We have only four weeks left to get it together.

**edit: He's DONE! :D

On to planning literacy night!

Minecraft Mondays #12: Witch

Happy Monday!

This week is the last block in the third row. Just two rows left! It's going by so fast.

The witch is up today:

original

If you're going strictly by the diagram, you'll need a skin tone, some brown, gray, black, purple-ish/maroon, blue and green.

But feel free to change it up. My son wanted to play with the witch a little bit, and came up with this alternate witch. If you do this one, you'll also need a couple of patches of white.

alternate

There are just a couple of minor differences. I had drawn up the diagram for the first one, but I'll include the cutting differences for the 2nd one if you like that one better. :D

Cutting:

Skin tone:
(2) 5 x 5"
(2) 2 x 2" for original or (4) 2 x 2" for alternate witch
(3) 2 x 3 1/2" for original or (1) 2 x 3 1/2" for alternate witch

Black:
(1) 2 x 12 1/2" for original or (1) 3 1/2 x 12 1/2" for alternate witch

Gray:
(2) 2 x 3 1/2"
(1) 2 x 9 1/2" for original witch only

Brown:
(1) 3 1/2 x 5"
(1) 2 x 12 1/2" for original witch only
(1) 2 x 9 1/2" for alternate witch only

White, Purple, and Blue:
(2) 2 x 2" squares each of purple and blue
(2) 2 x 2" squares white for alternate witch only

Green:
(1) 2 x 3 1/2"

Prep:

Stich together sections with small gray arrows first.

If making alternate witch, replace gray rectangle in row D with 2 x 9 1/2" rectangle of brown.

Also, if making the alternate witch, for row E, stitch 2 x 2" white squares to 2 x 2" skin tone squares and use in place of 2 x 3 1/2" rectangles on outer edge of each purple eye as shown in pic above.

Assembly:

Stitch together in order of the numbered arrows.

Note: If making alternate witch, steps 5 and 6 will be combined as you will use a 3 1/2 x 12 1/2" rectangle of black in place of the 2 x 12 1/2" rectangles of brown and black.

I hope that wasn't confusing! Apparently my original witch wasn't as accurate as it could have been, according to my in house 9 year old quality assurance committee, and some last minute changes were needed. I hope your minecraft experts will appreciate our attempt at accuracy. haha :D I hope you love whichever one you decide on and let me know if you have any questions, or if the instructions just don't make sense! Here's the finished alternate witch.

We sashed row three together after making the witch, and here it is with the first two rows!

I didn't get the shared photos together last week to show so I have lots to show this week!

I love @daydreamsofquilts lavender Enderman eyes. :D

@iadorepattern made a pig..

@ma1anie has started sewing along..

@sarahschrawdesigns is shrinking the blocks to 8" and using some great prints..

@sew_eileen made three Endermans..

@buttoncounter has started sewing along..

@candaceostewart is making two quilts and sashing them in different colors..

LeAnn at Some Cook, I Sew (www.somecooksomesew.blogspot.com)is making great progress..

@chellempcs is using prints that her son is helping to pick out..

@fatquartershop shared an Enderman and an ocelot..

@happy4learning caught up..

@karens__photos is all caught up..

@mamamel781 is all caught up and her kids like to play make believe with the blocks.. :D

@mamapalmer17 caught up in a hurry!

@scrappymommy2 is all caught up..

@shannajones99 found some really great background fabric called bitmap..

..and I got the most touching email this week from @naturalencountersappleton. She's making her special son a quilt out of her stash of civil war prints and batiks. So cool!!

I love seeing all of your blocks, and have had my eyes mist up more than once reading your messages and/or seeing your kids' or grandkids' pics with their blocks and reading about their excitement or how they want to help pick fabrics or learn to sew.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing and for making this so much fun!

Next week, it's on to the fourth row! And it'll be zombie pig-man! And I'll be sure to check with my quality assurance department for accuracy before doing the diagram next week. :D

Mine on, and have a great week!

xoxo
