Tutorial: Trash to Treasure Block (& giveaway winners!)

A few months ago, I blogged about my Trash to Treasure block, and had a request for a tutorial. I hadn't had a chance to make anymore, and hadn't taken any pics while making the others. But I finally had a minute to just sit and play with scraps again! I forgot how fun these are. :)

This is the most recent Trash to Treasure block. (i.e. a block made with bits and scraps from the floor under my machine ha!) I remembered to take pics this time so I could show you how I did it.

Step 1: Cut a 5 1/2" square (or whatever size you feel like cutting, depending on how big you want your final block.

Step 2: Gather some scraps from the floor your scrap bins. Strips, tiny bits, etc. Anything really. I like bright colors.

Step 3: Begin applying them haphazardly strategically around the outer edges of your square. Stitch, press to the outside, repeat.

***If you have a gap like this, just be sure to angle your next fabric enough and place it far enough in to cover it.

Work your way around the edges. Save the excess that you trim off for later use on this or another block.

Another example, this time at a corner.

If you have tiny or smaller pieces, you can piece them together and then sew them on.

Keep adding and stitching until you have about 2" worth of scraps on each side of your square.

Step 4: Turn your block over, and trim each side 1 1/2" from the edge of your white square.

(Save the bits for the next block.)

Voila! You could stop here. I really like it this way too.  I can't decided which I like better.

You would have about a 9" block give or take. Make enough blocks for however big you want your quilt to be and all those little bits of fabric can turn into this!

No sashing:

Sashing:

 Sashing and block framing..

OR...

Step 5: Cut your block into quarters..

..turn and reassemble into fat wonky crosses.

With sashing..

With sashing and block framing.

These were the very first two I made this way. I even framed them with scraps. You can tell one turned out smaller than the other because I used a smaller white square. But I just made up the difference in the frame pieces.

Anyway, I hope you tag me if you give them a try. :) I'd love to see!

Quiltmaker Blog Tour and Giveaway: 100 Blocks Vol. 12

Hello!

Welcome to my stop on the Quiltmaker 100 Blocks Volume 12 blog tour and giveaway!

If this is your first time here, I hope you'll have a look around and come back to visit sometime. :) If you've been here before, welcome back!

This is my block called "You've Got Mail", after one of my favorite romantic comedies. :) It's in the pieced category. I used my trusty Triangles on a Roll 1" finished HST paper to make the tiny HSTs. They are the only way I get close to perfect points on pieces that small. I am a perfect point challenged person. :)

I have had a crush on punctuation for years now and once made an entire quilt out of various punctuation marks for my nephew. It was a trial and error process for that quilt, and since then, I've been enjoying refining and shrinking some of those blocks down to 12" blocks.

This was a previous entry I did for Quiltmaker 100 blocks Vol. 10.

I thought it would be fun to put the ampersand block and the "@" block (does that thing have a name?) both into a quilt together.

I also think it'd make a great pillow with a modern feel.  I love the text print background for these blocks, but I also love anything in polka dots. :)
I hope if you try it you'll send me a photo, I'd love to see!

Now onto the giveaway!  There are three prizes up for grabs.

A $30 gift certificate from Winter Creek Cloth, a great online fabric shop based in Oregon:

A $30 gift certificate from Mad About Patchwork, a great online AND brick and mortar shop based in Ontario, Canada:

A copy of Quiltmaker 100 Blocks, sent to you from Quiltmaker Magazine in Golden, Colorado:

To enter, just leave me a comment letting me know where you're from. :) For extra entries, leave separate comments letting me know if you're a blog/IG/twitter etc. follower. One comment for each extra entry. Extra entries are totally optional and unnecessary, but I would love for you to follow along if you'd like.  I love to make new blog friends. :) (I have met two of my very best quilty friends through blog hops like this.) :)

Thanks for stopping in to visit, and thanks to Quiltmaker for sponsoring this tour, and including me. Happy hopping! Good luck in all of the drawings, and don't forget to visit all of the other stops on the tour this week! :)

P.S. If you happen to not win a copy of the magazine, but would like to get your hands on one and can't find it locally, they are available (digital and hard copy) by clicking on the Quilt and Sew Shop tab in the left sidebar or by clicking here.

A Sunday Finish; Awesome Blossom

I have a finish to share, from quite a while ago, that I never got to blog about. It's called Awesome Blossom, because the blossoms are HUGE! :) The finished size of the quilt is 75 x 75".

I made it with a new fabric line by Emily Taylor for Riley Blake called Chatsworth.  I have to confess, it was a little bit out of my comfort zone as I'm not generally drawn to soft, girly florals. I usually go for more bright colors, but I love how vintage-y this turned out. It grew on me more and more with each flower and by the end I was in love. It feels very old fashioned, but at the same time fresh. I want to curl up under it and take a nap. :)

I had a hard time getting pics of the quilt that showed the colors.  They say overcast is the best lighting for taking quilt photos, but we hardly ever get that in CA.

(Although I think El Nino has arrived..we've had rain for the last 3 Sundays in a row, (yay!) and the ski resorts in the Sierra are opening EARLY! Bring on the rain!!)

It hung in the Riley Blake booth at Quilt Market, so I wasn't able to share about it beforehand. It was super fun to make though.

Thanks for stopping by!  I have a few more finishes to blog about soon, but first, be sure to stop by tomorrow for the Quiltmaker 100 Blocks Vol. 12 Blog Tour.  There will be lots of prizes up for grabs all week long along the Tour. So come by to see my block, "You've Got Mail", enter to win one of two $30 gift certificates or a complimentary copy of the mag, then visit all of the other blogs for that day, hopping and entering.  It's always lots of fun to see everyone's blocks.

Happy Sunday!

xoxo
