Patchwork Punctuation: 2014's first finish!

I've decided that I should have a quilt *almost* done at the end of every year.  That way, during the first week of January, I can finish something and start the year feeling super productive, when I really did most of the work in 2013. ha!

Patchwork Punctuation is all DONE! YEAH! It was a beast to quilt on my 20 year old machine with 6" of throat space, but it is all done, bound and ready to be sent off to my nephew for Christmas.  *ahem--a little late* ;)  I can't wait to get my other machine back from the shop!

I spent the better part of the last three days quilting and binding it.

This is the quilting I was able to do before my machine went into the shop.  I was having fun playing with FMQ for really the first time on a big quilt.  But it started skipping stitches and catching.. which they are still trying to figure out.. everything else is checking out perfectly on it, but it's been FIVE weeks!  Hopefully they figure it out soon. :(  Anyway, I finally decided to just do straight line quilting on the rest of the quilt so it's mostly straight lines with just two or three areas of FMQ.

And then onto the binding made of all of the leftover scraps.

The design is something I sketched out onto graph paper last April when I was trying to figure out what to make for the AG Make it Right Challenge.  I hope my nephew likes it.. he's a freshman in HS this year.  Hard to believe! I figure he probably likes to text his friends a lot so hopefully this one suits him. :)

Today wasn't the best day to take pics outside.. :/  The back is green polka dot..

It's about 84 x 84".  And now it's all bundled up and ready to be boxed and mailed.  Whew!  Glad to have that one all done!

Oh, and someone else wanted me to send a New Year message to anyone who might happen by. :)

xoxo,

P.S.  Thanks to Jeifner for commenting and telling me about this.. hehe

Pretty! That's a lot of hard work, I know. I made four throws as gifts, spent all of Dec. bent over the sewing machine! I Love your quilting stitching over the fabric. I wish I had a deep bodied machine to do that type of stitching. Great Job!

Nicely done! I'm sure he'll appreciate it. There's a Ryan Gosling meme about handmade gifts after Christmas :)

Great quilt and quite a feat on your sewing machine. As for the machine.... I had a problem with my machine when I was in the middle of making a dress for my granddaughter. I tried everything to fix it and eventually gave up after several hours which involved all the ladies from my patchwork group. I then took it off to be fixed. Would you believe I was using the incorrect FOOT? Did I feel like a fool. The lovely repair man told me it was quite a common mistake and was often overlooked when trouble shooting.

What a lot of work you have done! Looks great! I am making a mental note to do a quiltbinding made from the scraps too- super idea.

That's a biggie - I love it! What a great idea to have something almost finished at the end of one year so that you look amazing right at the start of the next year! I am super impressed. I'm aiming to get me floor clean right now, let alone finish a quilt!!

This is an awesome quilt for a teenage boy. I am sure he will love it. I had a lot of problems with my Janome doing FMQ, and I tried quilting with the feed dogs still up, it sounds weird, but it solved my problems.

Hi Kelli, Happy New Year! I don't know if you have seen the blog I set up to keep track of the quilts donated to me for the babies of PNG (http://pateaquilts.blogspot.com.au/) but I just wanted you to know that your two lovely quilts are now in PNG with all the others, and will be distributed to native families over the coming weeks. My cousin plans to photograph each quilt with its new owner, and email them to me, so I can publish them on the blog as I get them.

WOW!!! what a great design. I think your idea of having something to finish first thing in the year is awesome. =) I did that on accident last year and it really boosted my list of what I worked on and finished for the year by having 3 items done so early in the year. he, he!

I adore the way you tied up the quilt to gift! very cute.

I didn't finish my FIL's birthday quilt until 3 days after his birthday, and finished the binding on my inlaws Christmas mini quilt before bed on Christmas Eve. Story of my life!

That's a huge quilt to do on a small machine! Well done. Anything that big ive sent out to long armers. I think it's a great quilt idea for a teenage boy. I'm off to find you on Instagram. I've just joined this year. You're welcome to follow me at sarahkrothe and see what I'm making there.
